A Montessori Approach to School Readiness
Rather than "preparing children for school" in a formal sense, our approach is about helping children feel capable, confident and comfortable within a school environment.
By the time children move on, they already:
• Recognise familiar spaces and faces
• Understand daily routines
• Feel confident navigating shared environments
• See themselves as capable members of a wider school community
At Plantpots Preschool, our strong school links ensure that the transition to Reception is not a leap — but a natural, supported step forward, rooted in independence, confidence and joy.
Strong School Links & A Confident Transition
At Plantpots Preschool, we are proud of the close and trusted relationship we share with the Early Years department at the school, creating meaningful continuity between preschool and Reception. Children benefit from regular, purposeful experiences that gently familiarise them with school life in a way that feels exciting, calm and reassuring, rather than rushed or overwhelming. At Plantpots Preschool, our strong school links ensure that the transition to Reception is not a leap — but a natural, supported step forward, rooted in independence, confidence and joy.
As part of this partnership, our preschool children:
• Visit the Reception classroom
• Help care for the school's pet guinea pigs, learning responsibility and empathy
• Enjoy time in the school library, nurturing a love of books and storytelling
• Join Reception children for shared experiences and social connection
These experiences help children build confidence in a new environment while still feeling safe, supported and known.
Mealtimes That Matter 🍽️
One of the most valued parts of this transition is children's involvement in school-style mealtimes. Our preschool children:
• Collect their own dinner trays
• Visit the kitchen to choose their lunch
• Sit and eat together in a calm, social setting
In Montessori education, mealtimes are recognised as an important opportunity for independence, social learning and real-life skills.
Through these shared meals, children develop:
• Confidence in making choices
• Independence and responsibility
• Social communication and table manners
• Respect for routines and one another
Mealtimes become a moment of connection, conversation and belonging — not just nourishment.
